1994 Commonwealth Games Boxing

THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES ROAD:

Introduction:
It was an interesting few years as we prepared
for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. The first order of boxing  was to form a boxing  committee which took place in 1989.
original committee members would be
Hassan Sunderani, Brian Zelley, Mike Sartori, Glynn Jones.

*The above link gives a detail of the Games in Victoria and one of the
sub-headings relates to the Boxing Committee and some of the early
happenings.  In 1991, I would serve as an interim boxing chairman.
It was expected to be for a short time, but delays in the appointment
of a full time chairman stretched the interim position to early 1992.

The Inside Story of the Preparation:

*the above blog will add some of
the details of the boxing committee
and the public meetings to build
a body of volunteers.

*There were some side issues such
as a trip to Seattle to observe the
1990 Goodwill Games of interest
one of the first persons that I would
see  once I arrived in Seattle
while at the hotel was former
Gold River boxing coach
Monty Brown, and four years
later, Monty would be involved
with cornering duties for a
foreign boxer at the Games.

1990 A Time For Action:

It was still early in the process, but it was time to build-up
local support for the boxing program.  This was done with
several public meetings where many folks were invited to
get involved from the ground level. Some of the folks that
came included Rick Brough, Mike Caird, Ian Weir and
Tommy Black and various others with past boxing
experience like Pud Smith and Bert Wilkinson.
Both Brough and Wilkinson had been former
Vancouver Island Boxing Commissioners.

Members of the boxing committee included
Glynn Jones who was representing Boxing BC so his
position was contingent on future elections.  Over time
he would leave and be replaced by others on the
boxing committee or the boxing support group
such as Ian Weir and Ian Duddy both of which
had been involved in boxing on the local level
through the London Boxing Club and the Victoria Athletics.
