My boxing journey 1975 and 1976
AFTER THE REVIVAL, THE NEXT TWO YEARS (1975 to 1976)
*With the publicity of the "Victorian" article on November 22, 1974,
more doors would open and the profile of boxing in Victoria would
be raised between 1975 and 1979. The key year would be 1976,
as the old London Boxing Club spokespersons would approach
Mike and myself about their desire to sponsor boxing in Victoria.
This would be a positive step, and Howard Curling would be
appointed by the British Columbia amateur boxing association
to serve as the Vancouver Island Commissioner. And, in
June 1976, Victoria would be one of two locations in
British Columbia to host an International tournament
between English boxers and a select group of BC junior
boxers.
On the provincial level the chief organizer of the
tournament was Joe Webb, while on the local level
the three key persons involved would be
Howard Curling, Mike Caird and Brian Zelley.
In charge of the officials would be Bert Lowes,
former boxing coach of the Vancouver South Hill
and Firefighters boxing clubs, and an
Olympic and International referee and judge.
Also, many members of the London Boxing Club
would be involved and boxers Wayne Crowe and
Ian Weir were allowed to fight on the card as two
senior open boxers. In his previous bout, Crowe
had fought Pan Am Games gold medalist and
Canadian champion Chris Clarke.
Special award:
*Caird, Curling and Zelley would also receive
special certificates from the president of the
BCABA for our efforts in improving the sport
of amateur boxing.
British Columbia boxers that were involved in the Victoria
tournament June 6, 1976 were:
Graden Brittain, Brian O'Reilly, John Herman, Dale Walters,
Barry Blatter, Wayne Blatter, Hamid Ismail, Steve Gallagher,
Danny Neal, Mike Cote, Dave Thornhill, Ron Herman and Billy Gilmore/
