MY BOXING STORIES

MY MANY BOXING STORIES: by Brian Zelley

*Beginning in the mid-Sixties, I began writing some of
the boxing stories of Nanaimo's Newcastle Boxing Club.

*In Victoria, I would mainly do boxing reports for
a sports paper called the "Sportcaster".

*But between October 1983 to January 1986, I would be the
editor of the "BC Amateur Boxing News".  The following link
is my attempt to summarize many of the stories:
http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/b-c-boxing-news-flashbacks-and-memories
It begins with a quick reference to the spring and fall 1983 issues of
"Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing News" that covered
then boxing current happenings from September 1982
until the end of the 1982/1983 boxing season.  But, then
gets into some of the many issues of the BC amateur boxing
news.  In all copies of both publications there were many
other stories titled FLASHBACKS which covered amateur
boxing in British Columbia back to about 1939 and the first
Golden Gloves tournament.

OTHER STORIES IN RECENT YEARS:

The above link covers a long list of topics from local to International
some of the examples include:
*Nanaimo Boxing History,
*Vancouver Island Boxing - Today & Yesterday,
*Boxing In British Columbia,
*Canadian Boxing - Past and Present
and many more from tragic stories to halls of fame.

Then there are those many on line blogs:

The above link has over 140 stories which run the gamut
from stories about individuals to international tournaments.
It also, includes stories on individual boxing clubs such as
the Campbell River Boxing Club and those stories on some
of the BC Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame inductees such as
Bert Lowes, Alan Brown, Roger Adolph and Allan Bayne.
But also others such as Ken Lally, Gordie Lawson,
Marc Leduc, Paul "P-Mac" MacKenzie and Michael Strange.
However, as this is my boxing journey, it would be approprate
to add some of my personal stories:

The above link covers part of the journey with various highlights from the
old Newcastle  Boxing days in the Sixties to the Victoria Jaycees boxing club
of the eighties, then on to the Nineties with the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

THE SEVENTIES could be considered the beginning of the modern era of
Canadian Amateur boxing
http://bzseventies.blogspot.ca/
*the poster boy of the Seventies Canadian amateur boxing was IAN CLYDE,
and during his long time as champion in the Seventies and 1980, there would be many
names to join him from Jack Snaith to Jamie Ollenberger, from Chris Ius to Stephen Nolan.
