ED WILLIAMS, a worthy nominee for the BCABHOF

ED WILLIAMS, a worthy nominee: by brian zelley

It is with great pleasure that Ed Williams has been nominated
for the 2013 British Columbia Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame.

The following is a reprint of a story that I wrote about Ed
which appeared in the "BC Amateur Boxing News" - May 1984.

"In 1973, a major development took place that was to benefit our
Native (First Nations) boxing programs. It was the revival of the
BC Buckskin Gloves after a 10 year absence.  The revival was
hosted by the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford Boxing Club and
held at the MSA Arena in Abbotsford in April '73... Not to be
forgotten  for his involvement was Ed Williams...

I first met ED WILLIAMS in 1967 at the BC Diamond Belt
tournament ... Ed remained a well liked person  for his heart
and his sportsmanship and was a dedicated boxer that took time
out of his own training to help others.  In 1972, another revival
took place in Nanaimo when the Nanaimo Boxing Club  staged
a show in April ... Williams faced Gary Bridal in the main event
... The revival of the boxing show in Nanaimo of which Ed  was
one of the stars would lead to the success of JACK SNAITH in the
1973 Canadian Nationals and the tribute that MICKEY GRIFFIN
would receive in 1974 when he was selected for the Jimmy Symes'
award.   In 1973, Ed Williams was a deserving recipient of the
prestigious Harold Mann Award for his outstanding contribution
for the betterment of amateur boxing.

ED WILLIAMS
 a star of the
Main Event
would face
Gary Bridal
in Nanaimo
in 1972 and a
year later would
by a recipient of
the prestigious
Harold Mann
Award for his
contribution to
the betterment of
amateur boxing.
