A new journey begins in Victoria:
NOVEMBER 1974, the story of the revival of boxing in Victoria.
The story was told by reporter Patty Pitts in the "Victorian"
newspaper on November 22, 1974 with the following title:
"Boxing Back From Ropes"
*The story covered some background of amateur
boxing in Victoria, and told of the steps being taken
by a small group of folks to revive boxing in
Victoria. Patty indicated "Now boxing is gaining
back some lost popularity ..: The four key folks
mentioned in the article were:
Mike Caird, Brian Zelley, Dan Wright
and Ian Weir.
Part of the background of the story spoke of Caird's
involvement in amateur boxing, and touched on
Wright and Zelley forming the Nanaimo Boxing Club
in 1971 and Weir's involvement in Saskatchewan
Amateur Boxing. Of importance, two of the others
that worked with Mike Caird between 1969 and 1973
were Gordie McGaw and Larry Montgomery. Some of
the boxers would be Geoff Robinson, Gary Robinson,
Wayne Crowe and Danny O'Sullivan. However, Wright
and Weir would also engage in some bouts before
Wright returned to Nanaimo for a couple of years
to train and coach at the Nanaimo Boxing Club.
